Usually quick: Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Ohio process mail and early ballots before Election Day, so most of their vote tends to post within a few hours of polls closing.
Usually slower: Pennsylvania and Wisconsin cannot start processing mail ballots until Election Day. Arizona and Nevada accept late-arriving mail and often take days. California counts for weeks.
Ranked choice and runoffs: Alaska and Maine use ranked-choice voting, so a race without a majority winner waits for later tabulation. Georgia holds a runoff four weeks later if no candidate tops 50%.
Early leads can flip: where mail ballots are counted first or last, the early leader may not hold. Watch the share reporting, not just the margin.
